ANGELA MEDLIN

Angela Medlin, Founder of FAAS (The Functional Apparel & Accessories Studio), is changing the face(s) of the apparel industry. Originally from North Carolina, this multifaceted designer relocated to the west coast where she built a successful career designing and directing for renowned global brands that include Nike/Jordan, Adidas, The North Face, Levi Strauss & Co., Eddie Bauer, and Cross Colours. During her 25+ years in the industry, one of the things she wanted to effectively shift was the lack of diversity in the corporate design and creative work spaces. In 2017, Angela left her leadership position at Nike/Jordan brand to collaborate with Dwayne Edwards, Founder of Pensole Footwear Academy. Working in partnership, their shared goal is to close the gap between under-represented creatives and the footwear/apparel industry. Together, they are preparing the next generation of diverse designers in an unprecedented ‘learn while doing’ program. In FAAS, Angela directs students to design apparel and accessories applying advanced performance benefits to athletic and fashion products. In just two years, FAAS has become an expanding resource for global brands seeking designers entering the industry proficient in ‘true to industry’ practices and leading edge processes.

Angela speaks publicly about her journey to inspire others to embrace their unique perspective and succeed by ‘doing the work’. In addition, this well rounded creative inspires others to be ‘whole creatives’; innovating outside of perceived limiting boxes. To her credit and strong work ethic, design accolades extend beyond her apparel career to recognized interior projects, fine art, and most recently her upscale lifestyle pet brand, House Dogge, LLC. Nevertheless, Angela considers one of her most important life goals is still in progress through the impactful and transformative FAAS design program.

COACHING FUTURE DESIGNERS TO BE SOLUTIONEERS

Through mentoring and coaching, Angela seeks to usher the next generation of 'solutioneers' into the global product design industry. She shares her approach to product creation (part instinct, part research, part process, part team work, and grounded in story telling) with her students to challenge them to create with purpose.

DIVERSIFING THE APPAREL & ACCESSORIES INDUSTRY

Through outreach, mentoring, public speaking, and brand advocacy, Angela brings awareness to opportunities available to those interested in pursuing a career in the apparel industry that may not know where to begin or are simply under represented in the industry. Scholarships will be offered throughout the program to give super achievers a chance for strong start. Potential designers will have the opportunity to jumpstart their education or introduction to the industry through juried competitions, workshops, and 12 week intensive programs.
